Soybeans were scouted at the R3 growth stage and foliage defoliation, axillary bud disturbance, and corn earworm larvae were observed. Injury was not observed to be widespread across the field.
Conclusion
This injury was confirmed by an NC State Extension Specialist as damage from corn earworm larvae. Corn earworms may feed on foliage, flowers, and fruit. At earlier soybean growth stages, the larvae are only feeding on the leaves. Major yield loss can come into play when large corn earworm larvae coincide with soybean seed that has achieved almost full size. In this environment, injury did not reach or surpass economic threshold but continued scouting is recommended. However, if damage continues the use an insecticide would be beneficial.
