Goose Feeding Damage

scouted June 1, 2023

Background
Soybeans were scouted at the V1 growth stage and signs of prominent goose feeding were observed. This field is in close proximity to a tree line, as well as a lake. Geese were spotted in this field grazing on multiple occasions.
Conclusion
This injury was confirmed by an NC State Extension Specialist as damage from goose feeding. Goose feeding can look very similar to deer feeding. Damage from goose feeding or grazing can depend on size and location of a field in correlation to habitable spaces or water sources, the time spent grazing, as well as growth stage at the time of feeding. In some areas of this environment the geese ate below the cotyledonary node. These plants will not recover. However, in other areas of this environment the geese did not eat below the cotyledonary node. These plants will have the opportunity to recover.
