Soybean Looper Present

scouted Sept. 5, 2024

Background
Soybeans were scouted at the R6 growth stage and extensive defoliation from soybean loopers was observed across the field.
Conclusion
This issue was confirmed by an NC State Extension Specialist as damage from soybean loopers. Soybean looper larvae are distinct feeders of foliage and prefer to reside in the lower canopy. Large infestations can completely strip foliage from fields. It is important to note that loopers do not feed on pods. Peak larval populations occur in September, mostly on later planted soybeans; as a result double crop soybeans are the most susceptible. The economic threshold for defoliating insects at this growth stage is 15% defoliation throughout the plant canopy two weeks prior to flowering (stage varies) until the pods have filled (R7-R8).
