Soybeans were scouted at the R6 Growth stage and southern green stink bug nymphs were observed to be at threshold. Tissue injury within soybean plants was noted as well.
Conclusion
This issue was confirmed by an NC State Extension Specialist as damage from green stink bug nymphs. Stink bugs have piercing mouth parts and feed on tender terminals, blooms, pods, and developing seeds within pods. In this environment, nymphs had reached threshold. The highest populations were observed in clusters along the edges of the field. Green stink bugs can be controlled with acephate and pyrethroid insecticides. Continued scouting throughout the field and along the edges is recommended as well.
