Zinc Toxicity

scouted June 13, 2023

Background
Soybeans were scouted at the V4 growth stage and browning of the leaves along with stunted plants were observed in widespread areas across the field. Biosolids were broadcasted over this field two years prior. Herbicide injury was suspected at initial observation.
Conclusion
This issue was confirmed by a NC State Extension Specialist as Zinc Toxicity following review of soil test reports. The application of biosolids in recent years aided in the accumulation of metals like Zinc, which led to these symptoms. In this environment it was suggested to lime to a pH of 6.8 to help alleviate the issue. In most instances, there are limited remedial options for this season.
