Soybeans were scouted at the V4 growth stage and a significant level of stand loss along with inconsistent emergence was observed. In this environment, soybeans were planted into a rye cover crop. When scouted, millipedes were present under the cover crop residue.
Conclusion
This injury was confirmed by an NC State Extension Specialist as damage from Millipedes. Millipedes are not a common pest in soybeans, however they can cause notable damage. Millipedes may feed below or above the soil surface. They will feed on leaves, stems, and seeds/seedlings. In this environment, millipedes were feeding on the seeds below the rye residue. Regularly continued scouting is recommended.
