Soybeans were scouted at the V3 growth stage and false chinch bugs were observed to be at or above threshold. These soybeans were planted into a double crop situation behind canola.
Conclusion
This issue was confirmed by an NC State Extension Specialist as injury from False Chinch Bugs. False chinch bugs usually infest fields in large numbers in patches. Given the name, these insects are sometimes mistaken for chinch bugs. False chinch bugs may feed on soybeans if their preferred host plant is killed. In this environment, the false chinch bugs moved off of the canola onto the soybeans. They disperse after a few days, and usually cause little to no damage. However, large numbers can be alarming.
