Background
Soybeans were scouted at the V8 growth stage and soybean stems were observed to be snapping at the base.
Conclusion
This injury was confirmed by an NC State Extension Specialist as damage from Threecornered Alfalfa Hoppers. Weakening and breaking of soybean stems as well as lodging are symptoms associated with damage from threecornered alfalfa hoppers. Recommended treatment to control this pest can include using a pyrethroid insecticide, along with continued scouting.
