Soybeans were scouted at the R1 growth stage and speckled/complete necrosis of leaves were observed. Gramoxone (group 22 herbicide) was applied for weed control in an adjacent area of the field with no crop present. Drift from the application caused this injury.
Conclusion
This issue was confirmed by an NC State Extension Specialist as injury from Paraquat Drift. Paraquat dichloride is the active ingredient in the herbicide, Gramoxone. Which makes it a photosystem I, group 22 herbicide. Paraquat is a non-selective, contact herbicide. Injury symptomology includes necrosis where the spray droplet lands on the leaf. Injury and/or plant death from paraquat will occur within several hours of application.
