Soybeans were scouted at the R6-7 growth stage and pod splitting and seeds sprouting in pods were observed in specific areas of this field. This environment recently suffered from hurricane induced rain over a span of 2 days.
Conclusion
This issue was confirmed by an NC State Extension Specialist as Pod Splitting and Pre-harvest Sprouting. Soybean seeds that are sprouting in the pod can occur when the seed moisture drops below 50% and then picks back up quickly above 50% from wet/dry cycles. Split pods can occur when conditions are excessively wet and soybeans are at the R6 growth stage. Resulting in a large seed size that may split the pod. Therefore, allowing the seed to be susceptible to pre-harvest germination. These issues cause concerns with seed quality and harvest efficiency. Planting early, utilizing earlier maturing varieties, and timely harvest are recommended.
