Threecornered Alfalfa Hopper Damage

Background
Soybeans were scouted at the R2 growth stage and lodging along with stand loss was observed.
Conclusion
This injury was confirmed by an NC State Extension Specialist as damage from Threecornered Alfalfa Hoppers. Weakening and breaking of soybean stems as well as lodging are symptoms associated with damage from threecornered alfalfa hoppers. If symptomolgy is severe one could visibly see stand loss, as observed in this environment. Recommended treatment to control this pest can include using a pyrethroid insecticide, along with continued scouting.
